The following are recommended Apps to choose from that are not installed from the factory which may be useful. No one needs all of them. Note: always read the description in the app store for more information and to decide if an app is likely to be useful to you and to check the price.
I have moved all of the Voice Dream LLC. apps to this section. I realized that the app bundle he offers for those who have not purchased Voice Dream Reader is a fantastic bargain. And, if you are looking for a couple good voices, James and Sharon are included in the Voice Pack (for $5.99 instead of $4.99 each. So, below is the app bundle information plus the information on each application.
The App Bundle is $29.99, while buying each app separately is $45.96. See below after the app bundle link for the individual app pricing and links.
Voice Dream Suite contains all our award winning apps, plus our two best text-to-speech
voices for US English. 4 Apps in This Bundle, Voice Dream Reader, Writer, Scanner, and the Voice Pack:
Voice Dream Suite on the App Store,
$29.99
This is my go to app for almost all reading material, especially for reading Bookshare books. Also gives access to Dropbox
files, Project Gutenberg books, web pages, Word files, PDF files, and more. Now includes a basic version of the Voice Dream Scanner to allow scanning directly into Voice Dream Reader. The Scanner also now recognizes columns! You can select your default voice, you get one
Acapella voice free with the app. You also have access to all the languages of the built-in VoiceOver voices. You can
purchase other voices from Acapella, Neo Speech and Ivona. *Note: you cannot read books made for a specific format like
iBooks, Nook, Kindle, etc. However, with Kindle books, there is a PC utility you can use to convert Kindle books so they can
be read using Voice Dream Reader, see Codex below.
Voice Dream Reader, on the App Store $19.99
Voice Dream Writer helps everyone write better: Text-to-speech proofreading reduces mistakes, phonetic and meaning search
help you use the right words, and an active outline helps you still organized and improves the structure of your writing.
Writer automatically creates an outline of headings, paragraphs and sentences. The Outline helps you structure your document
better by giving you an always-on overview. You can also quickly navigate to a section in a long document without endless
scrolling. You can also drag and drop elements in the Outline to organize your writing. No more selecting, cutting and
pasting large blocks of text.
If you also have Voice Dream Reader, any extra voices you purchased with Reader are available in Writer.
Voice Dream Writer, on the App Store $9.99
Winston Chen, who developed Voice Dream Reader and Writer, has developed an OCR Scanner that is better than any other OCR app on the market, bar none! You can save documents as PDF or text, though the PDF is fabulous because it retains the formatting, graphics, and is completely accessible with a screen reader.
If you turn on Edge Detection and auto Capture, and hold the iPhone steady, it will capture the image automatically. I
have tested it free-hand and with the Fopydo scanning Stand. It is amazing. It completely out performs other OCR apps. Plus, as of December 2021, it recognizes columns!
You can use a batch mode and process all the pages when you are done, or save the first page and then continue adding pages
to that scan.
The Scanner can be used as a stand-alone app or in conjunction with Voice Dream reader.
The Scanner app uses the Voice Dream voices that you already have, or you can use any of the iOS voices.
Voice Pack adds two of the best US English voices, Sharon and James, to Voice Dream Reader and Voice Dream Writer at 25%
discount.
After downloading this app, run it and you'll be prompted to download the two voices. When download is complete, restart
Voice Dream Reader, Scanner, and Writer, and these voices will be available. Make sure you have updated the Voice Dream Apps to the latest
release.
This app also does something useful. It contains a text box which you can paste any text into. And you can tap on any word,
the app will speak that word. It is useful to beginning visual readers to improve their phonetic skills.

Thanks to Alan Lemley for discovering that James Scholes web site seems to be no more. Never fear, I had kept the last version of the Codex installation file so please read on.
Here is a little section from his old web site.
A few years ago, I wrote a tutorial which guided people through the installation and configuration of software for the
purposes of gaining access to books purchased from the Amazon Kindle Store. The guide proved popular, but it required heavy
use of the command line, making it unsuitable and daunting for quite a lot of people, not to mention that it was an absolute
nightmare to troubleshoot if anything went wrong. Which it frequently did.
Subsequently, in 2014, I started to develop a small prototype application to make the process easier and more intuitive, not
only for people wanting to read Kindle eBooks, but also for me when people needed help. I named it Codex, a word used from
the 16th century onwards to denote, now ancient, manuscripts in book form. In the second half of 2015, I finally rewrote that
prototype to include the functionality I wanted it to have from the start, and the software is now publicly available to
download.
Please note, that you can only convert books you have purchased and only for your use--you cannot share them with others
without violating the copyright laws and cheating the author out of their tiny royalties.
In order to convert your Kindle books with Codex, you will need to install Kindle For PC version 1.17, which you can get
here:
KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183.exe
Note, you will need sighted help to sign into the Kindle app. That sign-in screen is not accessible.
Also, to turn off updating, open a book in the Kindle app, and tab to Options. Press Enter. In the first section of Options, which is general, tab to a check box about automatic updating. Make sure to uncheck it.
Since it appears that James Scholes no longer has a web site and I am unable to find out anything about what may have happened, I'm offering his Codex 2.1.1 version that I had downloaded in August of 2018. That appears to be the last version. I know it works with the Kindle for PC version 1.17 linked to above.
I will try and give an explanation of how to use the app, but since the web site is gone that previously had the information, this is coming from my memory and experience. I'm open to edits or additions.
after you have installed the Kindle for PC version 1.17, and logged into it wiht your Amazon/Kindle ID, be sure to not allow it to update the software! Then, install Codex from the link below.
When you download a book with the Kindle for PC, take note of where the download folder is located and find the . .azw file, which will have a meaningless name like: "B079DYG6L7-EBOK.azw."
Now, bring up the context menu with Shift+f10 or the applications key and press the letter x. This will open the codex conversion screen.
I arrow down once to the convert to submenu and right arrow.
I get the following options:
* Kindle
* Microsoft Word 2007
* ePub
* Compressed HTML
* Mobipocket
* PDF
* Rich text format
* Plain text
I hav no idea what to do with Compressed html files that end up with an extension of htmlz. However, I use the ePub option and books read great in Voice Dream Reader and retain all the headings, chapters, etc. Once you pick a format to convert your Kindle book to, press enter and wait for it to tell you it is done.
Then I tab to open folder, which takes you to the default folder Codex created when it was installed where you can then copy your converted file wherever you wish.
That is what I can tell you. Here is the download link for the Codex program.
Codex-2.1.1-setup.exe installation fileThis app allows you to search for and read Braille and audio books and magazines from the National Library Service. You
can search the BARD website and save books to your wish list. By going to your Wish List, they can be downloaded to your
device. Up to five devices can be used with one user account. Note, a braille display is required to read braille
material.

Libro.fm is the main competition to Audible.com. Libro.fm provides mp3 downloads of all audio books they sell, which means you can play them on any device with any app; you are not restricted to using the Libro.fm app, though it works fine with VoiceOver. You can load your books into Voice Dream Reader, or any mp3 player. Plus, and this is the selling point for me, you can designate a local bookstore to receive half of the proceeds from the book sale. If you have a membership, it is $14.95 per month and that gets you one book. Or you can buy books without a membership at the regular rate, similar to Audible.
From the app store:
Description
Libro.fm makes it possible for you to buy audiobooks through your local bookstore, giving you the power to keep money within your local economy, create local jobs, and make a difference in your community.
Choose from more than 215,000 audiobooks on Libro.fm, including bestsellers and bookseller picks, and your audiobook purchases are synced with the app immediately so you can start listening right away. If you ever have questions, feedback, or just want a good audiobook recommendation, you can reach out to us at hello@libro.fm, and a real, audiobook-loving human will get back to you.
They do not have a discount for annual memberships like Audible. And, sadly, Audible has some exclusive contracts with some authors/publishers, so some books are only available through Audible.com and their app or authorized devices.
There is an application available to convert Audible books to mp3 so you can use their books on any device as well, See below.
Libro.fm on the App StoreFrom their web site:
All your audiobooks are now in one place. OpenAudible is a cross-platform audiobook manager designer for Audible users. Manage all your audiobooks with our easy-to-use desktop application.
I have over 100 Audible books from previous years or ones I couldn't get from Libro.fm, so when I found out about Open Audible, I jumped at the chance to convert all my Audible books to MP3 files. Not only will it convert the books to MP3 as one file, but you can then have it split the book into the Audible chapters, which is not always the same as the book chapters, but close enough.
It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
It is $18.95 per year I believe. Well worth it in my opinion.

With Notes you can turn a list into an interactive checklist with a single tap. Or easily add a photo, map, or URL to a note. You can even draw a sketch with your finger on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. And thanks to iCloud, everything in your Notes are kept up to date across all your devices. So you can create a note on your Mac and check it on your iPhone when you're on the go. To use the new Notes. You can also sync notes from Microsoft Outlook and have them on your iDevice.
You can view and do basic editing of Word documents on your iDevices with a free Microsoft account. To use the full features of Word and other Microsoft Office products you will need an Microsoft 365 subscription. But, the basic Word app and Microsoft accounts are free.
Once again, I don't recommend editing using VoiceOver as you are not given accurate indications of where you are in the text.

Bar Codes are usually near the label seam on a can or bottle, on the bottom of boxes, along the seam of a bag, etc. When you hear the first beep on your device, turn the item slowly until you hear fast beeps. Then, slowly move the device closer to the item. When you are about 4 to 6 inches from the item, you should get results. SeeingAIProductChannelDemo.mp3

Boop is an an app to detect levels of light and interpret this information with sound. It allows its blind and visually
impaired users to detect whether lights are on or off. It covers a broad range of light levels which spans from sensing
daylight through open windows to checking whether the indicator light is on for a wifi router.
How to use
- Open app and accept permissions to use camera (first time only) - Point phone towards a light source - Listen and feel as
your phone changes tone and frequency of vibration while getting closer to the light - Only the light level at the center of
the camera (directly perpendicular to the phone face) is measured. Pointing the phone directly at the light source will get
the highest reading.
Volume control
- Volume control buttons on side of phone control Boop's playback volume - Mute will completely turn off sound - Toggle
vibrate on or off manually with the switch at the bottom of the app.
Voice over features
- 2 finger scrub to turn vibrate on or off - 2 finger double tap to close app - Tap center of app to read light
level
Light Detector transforms any natural or artificial light source it encounters into sound. Light Detector is easy to use!
Just run the application and point your iPhone camera in any direction. You will hear a higher or lower sound depending on
the intensity of the light.
Tap on the screen to hear (if VoiceOver is enabled) the current luminosity value (from 0 to 100%). The result can be provided
with a short delay (within three seconds). If you tap and hold, LightDetector stops playing. Useful to check lighting before
attempting to perform OCR (Optical Character Recognition.)

on the Use picture button. The built-in voice will speak each section. it will call seams, or wrinkles, stripes.

They have recently begun a section to request help from a specific company. Microsoft Accessibility is the first to join with
Be my Eyes to provide help if your computer stops speaking and you need expert help figuring out what is going on. Blind
users can request help from a sighted person and the sighted users will then be called for help. As soon as the first sighted
user accepts the request for help a live audio-video connection will be set up between the two and the sighted user can tell
the blind person what she sees when the blind user points his phone at something using the rear-facing camera.
As a sighted user you don't need to worry about missing a call and 'leave a blind person hanging' - you are a part of the
bigger Be My Eyes helper-network and we will find the next available sighted person in the network. The challenges that the
blind person needs help with can be anything from knowing the expiry date on the milk to getting help crossing the

As of January 22, 2018, the updated EyeNote. 3.0 app is now 64-bit and works on Apple mobile devices that support iOS version 9.1 or greater. These include Apple iPhone. 5 and newer models, 5th generation iPod. Touch and later generations, and iPad.2 and newer models.
Scanning Notes:
To complete a successful scan, the note should be positioned 6 to 8 inches away from the camera. The app must scan more than
half of the note to recognize it. Adequate natural or artificial lighting is required for proper scanning, for ideal scanning
conditions limit hand movement to reduce image blur. For best results, place the note on a flat surface. In Privacy mode, the
app will not speak the denomination, but will communicate results back to the user with a pulse pattern (see below). On the
iPhone, Privacy mode uses the vibration buzzer for the pulses. On the iPod Touch and iPad 2, Privacy mode uses an audible
beep for the pulses. The patterns follow an easy sequential pattern:
Also, in the iOS Settings/Eyenote, you can toggle a settings menu on, so you can change from Speak, Tone, or Pulse in the
app itself.
Make sure you set your device correctly:
Go to Settings, then Sounds. There are 2 Vibrate setting switches on this screen. At the top of the Sounds screen there is
Silent, with a vibrate switch setting; this switch does not matter for the EyeNote to vibrate. Scrolling down the screen
there is another Vibrate switch just above Ringtone. This Vibrate setting has to be set to ON for EyeNote to vibrate on an
iPhone.

WalkAssist is an app designed by a junior in high school who is trying to help those with visual disabilities cross streets more safely.
This appp in its first version will recognize crosswalks and walk/don't walk signs on traffic signals in the United States. (Feedback from other countries is welcome to improve the app.)
The app has nothing on the screen to interact with; you simply launch the app and point it at an intersection and if it recognizes a crosswalk, it will say, "crosswalk," and if it recognizes a walk/don't walk sign it will speak "Walk" or "Don't Walk" and with don't walk, it will also give a haptic signal. It works on the iPhone, or iPod Touch, running iOS 15.0 or later, and on Macs with the M1 chip running MacOS 12.0 or later. It needs no internet connection, which is why it works on the iPod touch, it is just using the camera to match images in its database.
The app is actively being worked on, so check in the app store for updates often.
As of version 1.1, February 16, 2022, it opens with the instructions for using the app and you need to hit the OK button to use the app. This will be adjusted in a future update so it doesn't load the instructions everytime you load the app.
Lazarillo is very similar to BlindSquare, only it is completely free. You can track a destination, launch Google Maps or
Apple Maps to get turn-by-turn directions, etc. It does not have all the extra features, but if you want a simple app to
assist you with orientation and directions, this will do the trick.
The author is also very responsive to feedback.

When BlindSquare has determined your location using your device's GPS capabilities, it will look up information about your
surroundings on FourSquare and Open Street Map. Employing unique algorithms, it will then ascertain the information most
useful to you and speak it to you. Use this app to find a nearby cafi, post office, store. Shake your device to hear your
current address, as well as information about the location of the nearest street intersection and nearby venues. Also
interacts with several GPS apps for turn-by-turn instructions. Google Maps is recommended.

12 fun home screen widgets • Apple Watch App with 100s of Complications • Create alerts for 24 solar & lunar events such
as sunrise, sunset, dawn, dusk, and moonset
Sundial displays the sun and moon's rise/set cycle in a 24-hour ring. You can create alerts for solar/lunar events and see
times for a different date or location. No Internet is required to compute rise/set and other times: everything is calculated
on your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
Times for dawn, sunrise, solar noon (sun peak), sunset, and dusk are displayed, along with daylight length. Moonrise, lunar
noon (moon peak), and moonset are shown, along with lunar illumination and graphical moon phase. Unlike most apps, moon tilt
is customized to your time and location.
Create iOS notifications for 24 solar and lunar events:
The app has full voice over support for all features.
Note: reported times switch between AM/PM and 12/24 notation based on your system settings.
What’s New
May 4, 2021 Version 7.1
Sundial Watch:
- New option for what to display inside the dial circular complication: solar or lunar altitude
- Added warning to About page if location services are disabled
- Voice over improvements
- Fixed: the setting to turn off the twilights on dial complications was not sticky and reverted back to on whenever the
Watch app was killed off by watchOS
- Fixed: on the Watch, latitude/longitude meridian direction on About page could be reported incorrectly as E or N when near
the meridian
Sundial Widgets:
- Voice over improvements
iOS and iPad:
- Add information about watchOS 7 requirement to Welcome and in-app purchase pages
Note from the developer: the Apple Watch app should be good to go for voice over, but I still have some work to do on the
complications. The dial complication is good, but any of the others only read the label of the complication and not data.
That is high on my list to complete. He has a VoiceOver user on his beta team to assist him.

• TalkingTime speaks the time on the hour, half-hour and/or quarter-hour.
• "Set and forget". The app only runs during setup so you can do other stuff with your phone, and it won't run down your battery.
The developer is very responsive and working to make the app as accessible as possible. I reached out to him about the app before purchasing it and he put me in touch with Pam Coffey, who is another VoiceOver user who had sorted out how to setup the app. She shared the below with me and gave me permission to pass it along.
I have modified her instructions to fit iOS 15.2, but Pam deserves credit for the bulk of the instructions.
When you open the app, the entire screen is taken up by the in-app settings. The first button is not labeled. Double tapping on it just gives you the message to set the schedule and forget it.
The next item simply says " Set desired schedule then exit the app."
Next is Background Sound, which is now turned on by default, which is what you want.
When you double-tap Schedule, there are four columns of time indications: on-hour , beginning with midnight at the top of the screen, and ending with 11 PM at the base of the column; quarter past, beginning with 12:15 AM, and ending with 11:15 PM at the base of the column; half-past, beginning and ending with 12:30 AM and 11:30 PM; and three-quarters past, arranged in the same way. If you wish, for example, to have it alert you every 15 minutes throughout the day, beginning at 6:30 AMand ending at 10:30 PM, you will double-tap 6:30 AM and long press (also known as double-tap and hold) on 10:30 PM. Next, double-tap on 6:45 AM, and long press 9:45 PM. Then, double-tap 7 AM, and Lon press 10 PM. Finally, double-tap 7:15 AM, and long press 10:15 PM. If you _only want it to alert you at a few times of the day, simply double-tap the times you wish to be alerted (e.g., 6:30 AM, 8 AM, 2:45 PM, 6 PM and 10 PM). If you have selected a time and then wish to deselect it, double-tapping it again will toggle it off. If you wish to deselect _all of the selected times within a column, find the one nearest the top of that column, and long press it.
As of Version 4.8.1 of Talking Time, you can do two more things with the announcements. If it is a spoken announcement, you cann quadruple tap on the time and a text field opens up. You can enter any phrase you want spoken each time that announcement is made.
Now go to the home screen and then return to TalkingTime if you have more settings to work on.
Next is Speak Changes. Speak changes is now on by default which helps when making adjustments.
The next heading is Voice or Ding. Double tap and you can set each quarter hour to be a voice announcement or a ding. See the explanation of the Ding patterm below.
Both Voice announcements and dings are limited to a total of 64 per 24 hour period.
high ding on the hour (minute hand at the top)
high-low ding at quarter after (minute hand moving down)
low ding at half past, (minute hand at the bottom)
low-high ding at quarter of (minute hand moving up)
The next item is Voice". Here, you can choose from among a number of speaking voices; and, you can also choose speaking rate (which is a bit quirky), whether or not you want it to begin with "The time is …",., and whether or not you want it to include AM and PM. Once you've set these options, double-tap "Save"; then, the next item is Volume. The volume setting for this app is related to that of the ringer and alerts; therefore, if you wish to make a major change in the volume, you may need to go to your general settings, choose "Sounds and Haptics", and enable "Change with Ringer and Alerts"-at least until you have it set to your preference.
The remaining items are "It's Not Working", "Feedback", "Share", and "About".
Its Not Working is a way of testing to make sure your settings will work. Double tap "Its not working" and then immediately go to the home screen. Within a few seconds, you should hear a message from TalkingTime confirming that it is working. If you don't hear it, try rebooting your device and try again.
As of iOS 15.2 and version 4.8.1 of Talking Time, the only notifications you need to have on under Settings, Notifications, Talkingtime, are Allow Notifications and Sounds On. That way it won't clutter your notification center. After setting it up, take it out of the app switcher and it will continue working in the background. It takes almost no power and doesn't drag down your phone resources.

Audio Memos is a professionally made audio recorder. It has an amazingly intuitive interface, which is easy to use and full of powerful features. Use it in interviews, lectures, music session, briefings, ... and simplify your recording tasks.
I use the IQ 6 for recording with the iPod Touch or iPhone. The IQ 6 has an earphone jack so you can hear VoiceOver while
recording. Note: you either have to remove your case or have a thin enough case for the short jack on the microphone to fit
into the lightning plug on the device.
Turn your favorite iOS device into a field recorder by connecting an iQ6. Whether it's a podcast on the fly, an impromptu
concert or band rehearsal or a sound effect you want to incorporate into your next video, you can count on the iQ6 to capture
the moment with superior audio.
X/Y recording made easy
The iQ6 features two high quality unidirectional condenser microphones in an X/Y configuration, the same ones used in our
world-famous H4n Handy Recorder. (handiRecorder is a good app, but difficult to use with VoiceOver.)
X/Y stereo recording is a great way to cover a wide area while still capturing sound sources in the center with clarity and
definition. You can even change the mic angle from 90 degrees for a tightly focused image to 120 degrees for immersive
wide-angle stereo. (US Patent 8184815)
Zoom IQ 6 at Amazon I used the IQ 6 and

Description:
HotPaw Talking Tuner is a hands-off, sound-activated, talking, chromatic, musical instrument tuner. It talks to tell you if your instrument is in tune or not; so you don't even have to look at it or touch the display. Talking Tuner uses speech synthesis, and works with or without VoiceOver being enabled.
This app was created because I received a request to develop an iPhone app which could help a vision-challenged individual tune their musical instrument. This app is the result.
With the Auto-Speak switch turned on, Talking Tuner will listen for a note to be played, and then, after waiting for the end of the sound (so as not to talk over it), will speak the note name, and how many cents sharp or flat the end of the note is estimated to be.
Using headphones may help make it easier to hear what this app is saying while tuning. Make sure to turn the volume up high enough to hear it.
The pitch estimation algorithm works best for notes between 2 octaves below Middle-C to 2 octaves above Middle-C. It may not work as well for very low notes, very high notes, or with any background noise, harmony, or accompaniment present. The default tuning resolution is about +- 3 cents (3/100ths of the pitch difference between semitones). Optional higher resolution tuning settings may result in a slower tuning response.
App is being kept up to date.
Knit and Crochet Counter helps you keep track of the rows while you're working on your project.
Simply tap anywhere on the screen and track your rows, and don't worry about your screen turning off, as it will stay on
while you are using the app.
Working on multiple projects simultaneously? No problem, just create multiple projects, and give each of them their own
name.
Don't like the color theme of the app? Change it, there are many different options to choose from, and if you become a
supporter of the app, the icon will also take on the color you select!
Prefer to work in silence? Use the option to turn of the tap-sound, easy!
Use the widget for maximum convenience!
Support for less then a yarn. $0.99
*Note: a friend says to name your projects, just double tap on the pencil icon.
Smart Metronome turns your iPhone into a simple, stylish and very accurate metronome!
