Voice Dream Reader Text to Speech, iOS,, for new users, free trial, then a yearly subscription

As of April 25th, 2023, winston Chen has sold Voice Dream Reader and Voice Dream LLC. to the Applause Group. It will now become a subscription app. New users will be able to have a 7 day free trial, then it will be an annual subscription. Check the app store for pricing.

As of April 6, 2024, Voice Dream LLC. made a major announcement about Voice Dream Reader. Here is a version of the announcement compiled from several emails to the voice-dream group.

Hi everyone,
Following our recent announcement to transition Voice Dream to a subscription, we received an overwhelming response from thousands in our community. Your feedback, along with the impactful stories shared about Voice Dream being a pivotal part of your daily lives, has led us to reverse this change.

All new features will be in the same app, not a separate app. The subscription includes the Mac app, iOS app, iPadOS app, all the voices and would include future features as well!

For those who have already moved to a subscription, you may cancel your subscription, but we welcome you to keep it active to support ongoing development.

To those who wish to support Voice Dream, please consider a subscription, a one-time donation via our website, or simply leaving a positive review in the App Store.
To donate, go to: the Donations page

If you are on the fence, or want to see what the new features are like, you can always subscribe in the future. No rush to do so now.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
If you are not part of the voice-dream list, you can write to:

I highly recommend joining the Voice-Dream list by sending an email to

In my humble opinion, it is worth paying For on a subscription basis. For those who already purchased the app, previously under the “lifetime purchase”, they can purchase it for a 25% discount, so $59.99 per year for life. New Users will pay $79.99 per year.
I agree with Winston and the Applause Group, that a one time purchase model is not sustainable. Especially if you want the app to continue to improve with new technology and out live the programmer. By having a team of programmers involved, it doesn't depend on one person to keep the app going.

This is my go to app for almost all reading material, especially for reading Bookshare books. Also gives access to Dropbox files, Project Gutenberg books, web pages, Word files, PDF files, and more. Now includes a basic version of the Voice Dream Scanner to allow scanning directly into Voice Dream Reader.

All voices are now included that used to be a separate charge.

*Note: you cannot read books made for a specific format like iBooks, Nook, Kindle, etc. Given the above announcement, it may be possible to access Kindle books in a future new feature in Voice Dream Reader. In the meantime, however, with Kindle books, there is a PC utility you can use to convert older Kindle books so they can be read using Voice Dream Reader, see Codex below. Sadly, Amazon has changed things so newer Kindle books may not be able to be converted.

Voice Dream Reader for Desktop, Mac OS, Monthly Subscription

Note: the subscription also covers the iOS and iPadOS apps. Description from the Mac app store:
Requires sign-in and paid subscription. 14-day free trial.

Voice Dream Reader lets you listen to PDF documents, Web articles, and eBooks using text-to-speech. Although it is designed for people with visual impairment, dyslexia, ADHD, and other reading challenges, everyone can benefit. Your documents become audiobooks, so you can read while you walk, exercise or do chores. For productivity-minded people, with some practice, you can read at twice your sight-reading speed. Unlike audiobooks, you can highlight, take notes, and see the words as they're spoken to improve comprehension and retention.

Voice Dream Reader for iOS is a 2021 Apple Design Award Winner, and it's been featured by Apple as Best New App and App of the Day in 81 countries. Using the award-winning iOS app as building blocks, we wrote Voice Dream Reader Desktop from ground up as a native macOS app with a completely redesigned user interface. The result is a full-featured, desktop-class application fully optimized for the Mac.

See the Mac app store page for more details.

Codex by James Scholes

Thanks to Alan Lemley for discovering that James Scholes web site seems to be no more. Never fear, I had kept the last version of the Codex installation file so please read on.

Here is a little section from his old web site. A few years ago, I wrote a tutorial which guided people through the installation and configuration of software for the purposes of gaining access to books purchased from the Amazon Kindle Store. The guide proved popular, but it required heavy use of the command line, making it unsuitable and daunting for quite a lot of people, not to mention that it was an absolute nightmare to troubleshoot if anything went wrong. Which it frequently did.
Subsequently, in 2014, I started to develop a small prototype application to make the process easier and more intuitive, not only for people wanting to read Kindle eBooks, but also for me when people needed help. I named it Codex, a word used from the 16th century onwards to denote, now ancient, manuscripts in book form. In the second half of 2015, I finally rewrote that prototype to include the functionality I wanted it to have from the start, and the software is now publicly available to download.
Please note, that you can only convert books you have purchased and only for your use--you cannot share them with others without violating the copyright laws and cheating the author out of their tiny royalties.
In order to convert your Kindle books with Codex, you will need to install Kindle For PC version 1.17, which you can get here:

Note, you will need sighted help to sign into the Kindle app. That sign-in screen is not accessible.
Also, to turn off updating, open a book in the Kindle app, and tab to Options. Press Enter. In the first section of Options, which is general, tab to a check box about automatic updating. Make sure to uncheck it.

Since it appears that James Scholes no longer has a web site and I am unable to find out anything about what may have happened, I'm offering his Codex 2.1.1 version that I had downloaded in August of 2018. That appears to be the last version. I know it works with the Kindle for PC version 1.17 linked to above.

I will try and give an explanation of how to use the app, but since the web site is gone that previously had the information, this is coming from my memory and experience. I'm open to edits or additions.

after you have installed the Kindle for PC version 1.17, and logged into it wiht your Amazon/Kindle ID, be sure to not allow it to update the software! Then, install Codex from the link below.

When you download a book with the Kindle for PC, take note of where the download folder is located and find the . .azw file, which will have a meaningless name like: "B079DYG6L7-EBOK.azw."
Now, bring up the context menu with Shift+f10 or the applications key and press the letter x. This will open the codex conversion screen.

I arrow down once to the convert to submenu and right arrow.
I get the following options:
* Kindle
* Microsoft Word 2007
* ePub
* Compressed HTML
* Mobipocket
* Rich text format
* Plain text

I hav no idea what to do with Compressed html files that end up with an extension of htmlz. However, I use the ePub option and books read great in Voice Dream Reader and retain all the headings, chapters, etc. Once you pick a format to convert your Kindle book to, press enter and wait for it to tell you it is done.

Then I tab to open folder, which takes you to the default folder Codex created when it was installed where you can then copy your converted file wherever you wish.

That is what I can tell you. Here is the download link for the Codex program.

BARD Mobile, free:

This app allows you to search for and read Braille and audio books and magazines from the National Library Service. You can search the BARD website and save books to your wish list. By going to your Wish List, they can be downloaded to your device. Up to five devices can be used with one user account. Note, a braille display is required to read braille material.
BARD Mobile in the App store is the main competition to provides mp3 downloads of all audio books they sell, which means you can play them on any device with any app; you are not restricted to using the app, though it works fine with VoiceOver. You can load your books into Voice Dream Reader, or any mp3 player. Plus, and this is the selling point for me, you can designate a local bookstore to receive half of the proceeds from the book sale. If you have a membership, it is $14.95 per month and that gets you one book. Or you can buy books without a membership at the regular rate, similar to Audible.

From the app store:
Description makes it possible for you to buy audiobooks through your local bookstore, giving you the power to keep money within your local economy, create local jobs, and make a difference in your community. Choose from more than 215,000 audiobooks on, including bestsellers and bookseller picks, and your audiobook purchases are synced with the app immediately so you can start listening right away. If you ever have questions, feedback, or just want a good audiobook recommendation, you can reach out to us at, and a real, audiobook-loving human will get back to you.

They do not have a discount for annual memberships like Audible. And, sadly, Audible has some exclusive contracts with some authors/publishers, so some books are only available through and their app or authorized devices.

There is an application available to convert Audible books to mp3 so you can use their books on any device as well, See below. on the App Store web site

Open Audible

From their web site:
All your audiobooks are now in one place. OpenAudible is a cross-platform audiobook manager designer for Audible users. Manage all your audiobooks with our easy-to-use desktop application.

I have over 100 Audible books from previous years or ones I couldn't get from, so when I found out about Open Audible, I jumped at the chance to convert all my Audible books to MP3 files. Not only will it convert the books to MP3 as one file, but you can then have it split the book into the Audible chapters, which is not always the same as the book chapters, but close enough.

It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

It is $18.95 per year I believe. Well worth it in my opinion.

Audible app, free

Requires an Audible account, but any books you purchase from audible can be down loaded directly to your device.
Transfer books to your device over Wi-Fi. Chapter navigation, bookmarking, sleep mode, variable narration speed, button-free Mode. Multitasking for background downloading and listening. Switch between reading and listening with Whispersync for Voice (compatible Kindle app or device required)

Books from Apple, Free

This app from Apple allows you to read most ePub and PDF documents/books. It gives you access to free as well as books for purchase through the iBookStore. These are books in text format that can be read either on the screen or by using VoiceOver. All the books provided through the ibookStore are supposed to be accessible.

This is the app from Learning Ally (formerly Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic.) It allows one to listen to their books on any of the iDevices. It is fully accessible with VoiceOver. Includes bookmarking, page and chapter navigation and the ability to change the playback rate. Learning Ally has created a new Download Manager that makes it much easier to down load their books for DAISY players or the Apple IOS devices. Note: A Learning Ally membership is required.

NoteMaster, $3.99

This is a plain text editor that will sync with DropBox or Google Docs. It has the usual options of e-mailing documents, printing to an air-print printer, etc. There is a free lite version you can try out that limits the number of documents you can have.

Pages, $9.99, but free with more recent devices

Pages is the Apple word processor for mobile devices. Create, edit, and view documents. Pages works with iCloud, so your documents stay up to date on all your devices automatically. This app works much better with a Bluetooth keyboard or wireless braille display. However, I do not recommend it because you often are not given accurate information as to where you really are in the text you are editing by VoiceOver.
pages in the App Store

Notes, included on your iDevice, free

With Notes you can turn a list into an interactive checklist with a single tap. Or easily add a photo, map, or URL to a note. You can even draw a sketch with your finger on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. And thanks to iCloud, everything in your Notes are kept up to date across all your devices. So you can create a note on your Mac and check it on your iPhone when you're on the go. To use the new Notes. You can also sync notes from Microsoft Outlook and have them on your iDevice.

Microsoft Word

You can view and do basic editing of Word documents on your iDevices with a free Microsoft account. To use the full features of Word and other Microsoft Office products you will need an Microsoft 365 subscription. But, the basic Word app and Microsoft accounts are free.

Once again, I don't recommend editing using VoiceOver as you are not given accurate indications of where you are in the text.

OCR, Optical Character Recognition

VDScan, formerly Voice Dream Scanner by Opus Noma LLC, iOS, $9.99

Winston Chen, who developed Voice Dream Reader and VDWrite, has developed an OCR Scanner that is better than any other OCR app on the market, bar none! You can save documents as PDF or text, though the PDF is fabulous because it retains the formatting, graphics, and is completely accessible with a screen reader.

If you turn on auto Capture, and hold the iPhone steady, it will capture the image automatically. I have tested it free-hand and with a scanning Stand. It is amazing. It completely out performs other OCR apps. Plus, as of December 2021, it recognizes columns!
You can use a batch mode and process all the pages when you are done, or save the first page and then continue adding pages to that scan.
The Scanner app uses the built-in iOS voices.

Seeing AI Product Channel Demo

Below is a link to a short recording demonstrating the product channel in the Seeing AI app. I did not say everything in the recording. Bar Codes are usually near the label seam on a can or bottle, on the bottom of boxes, along the seam of a bag, etc. When you hear the first beep on your device, turn the item slowly until you hear fast beeps. Then, slowly move the device closer to the item. When you are about 4 to 6 inches from the item, you should get results. SeeingAIProductChannelDemo.mp3

Email info at

NaviLens has lots of free personal use tags, and also new free kits for schools and associations; along with Way-Finding codes that allow you to use NaviLens to create your own route to a particular tag.

Here is Sandy's explanation of the Way-Finding Codes from the LetsNaviLens email group.
These are available for free with the other personal kits, but they can also be part of a public installation.
What do Way-Finding Codes do? First you need to install your code in a suitable location, and affix it, in a fairly permanent manner. This is necessary, as you are going to create "routes" which your phone will follow, accurately! But this is not using GPS, which wouldn't be accurate at all! This is using the various sensors in your phone, the gyroscope, Magnetometer, Barometer, etc. You then scan the code and choose "Create Route", The only way to describe the next bit, is to do it! Suffice it to say, you then walk your chosen route, as straightforwardly, as possible, until you reach the end and choose "end route" Then you name it and save it. The first time you create a route, you may be offered to revers the route and return to the point of origin, I.E. the Way-Finding Code. In general, though, these codes, at the moment, only work one way, if you want a return route, you have to put up a second Way-Finding Code and create a new Route.

The best thing is to get the app, read about it, request the personal tags, and begin using them in as creative a way as you can.

Be My Eyes Helping blind see, Free

Be the eyes for a blind person in need of help remotely through a live video connection if you are sighted or be assisted by the network of sighted users if you are blind.
They have recently begun a section to request help from a specific company. Microsoft Accessibility is the first to join with Be my Eyes to provide help if your computer stops speaking and you need expert help figuring out what is going on. Blind users can request help from a sighted person and the sighted users will then be called for help. As soon as the first sighted user accepts the request for help a live audio-video connection will be set up between the two and the sighted user can tell the blind person what she sees when the blind user points his phone at something using the rear-facing camera.
As a sighted user you don't need to worry about missing a call and 'leave a blind person hanging' - you are a part of the bigger Be My Eyes helper-network and we will find the next available sighted person in the network. The challenges that the blind person needs help with can be anything from knowing the expiry date on the milk to getting help crossing the street.
Note: We encourage blind users to be patient when requesting help because we rely on real people to help you.
- Live audio-video connection between blind and sighted users
- Add the languages you know under settings
- An easy way you can make a difference for blind people

Be My Eyes is adding an AI (Artificial Intelligence) channel. In my beta testing, I'm extremely impressed. Instead of waiting for a human volunteer, the AI channel tries to give a thorough description of the picture taken with BE MY Eyes. You can ask follow up questions for more detail. Here is one simple example from a picture my Great-Niece sent me of her 14 month old son.
The picture features an adorable baby boy sitting among a bunch of pumpkins. The baby has curly light hair and is wearing a green cap with a yellow front. He is dressed in a striped orange and white shirt with navy blue suspenders. He has a big, joyful smile on his face showing his little teeth. The baby is surrounded by medium-sized, bright orange pumpkins. Some of the pumpkins have stickers on them. The background is a brown cardboard-like surface with some green patches. The baby's blue shoes are also visible, and he seems to be having a great time sitting among the pumpkins.

Qatari Money Reader, Free

The application features accessible notifications, providing users with the high degree of privacy protection required in such transactions, and contributing to an independent shopping experience for the visually impaired.

The Qatari Money Reader lets users collect and organize their notes and calculate the total value based on quick scans with a mobile phone. It tells the user the value of each note in either Arabic or English, facilitating cash transactions without depending on eyesight, visual assistance, or adequate viewing conditions.

The app can also detect different currencies. The reader identifies all Qatari riyal (QAR), US dollar (USD) and British pound sterling (GBP) notes using the phone's camera in real time and without having to connect to the Internet.

Should users need to convert currencies or comprehend the monetary value of a product or service, the app contains exchange-rate conversion, which was recently added to the app, to facilitate such processes. Additional features include a "detecting" mode that can differentiate genuine from fake notes under an external ultraviolet (UV) light are currently underway.

The above is from a news article dated September, 2021.

I'm not sure how they keep up the accuracy of the exchange rates since they don't connect to the internet, unless they do for that channel alone, I just do not know.

EyeNote money identifier from Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Free

As of January 22, 2018, the updated EyeNote. 3.0 app is now 64-bit and works on Apple mobile devices that support iOS version 9.1 or greater. These include Apple iPhone. 5 and newer models, 5th generation iPod. Touch and later generations, and iPad.2 and newer models.

Scanning Notes:
To complete a successful scan, the note should be positioned 6 to 8 inches away from the camera. The app must scan more than half of the note to recognize it. Adequate natural or artificial lighting is required for proper scanning, for ideal scanning conditions limit hand movement to reduce image blur. For best results, place the note on a flat surface. In Privacy mode, the app will not speak the denomination, but will communicate results back to the user with a pulse pattern (see below). On the iPhone, Privacy mode uses the vibration buzzer for the pulses. On the iPod Touch and iPad 2, Privacy mode uses an audible beep for the pulses. The patterns follow an easy sequential pattern:

Also, in the iOS Settings/Eyenote, you can toggle a settings menu on, so you can change from Speak, Tone, or Pulse in the app itself.
Make sure you set your device correctly:
Go to Settings, then Sounds. There are 2 Vibrate setting switches on this screen. At the top of the Sounds screen there is Silent, with a vibrate switch setting; this switch does not matter for the EyeNote to vibrate. Scrolling down the screen there is another Vibrate switch just above Ringtone. This Vibrate setting has to be set to ON for EyeNote to vibrate on an iPhone.

WalkAssist, free

WalkAssist is an app designed by a junior in high school who is trying to help those with visual disabilities cross streets more safely.

Note: as of July 2022, WalkAssist is available again with an improved version. The creator of the WalkAssist app would appreciate people giving the new version a try and sending her feedback at: at

The app has nothing on the screen to interact with; you simply launch the app and point it at an intersection and if it recognizes a crosswalk, it will say, "crosswalk," and if it recognizes a walk/don't walk sign it will speak "Walk" or "Don't Walk" and with don't walk, it will also give a haptic signal. It works on the iPhone, or iPod Touch, running iOS 15.0 or later, and on Macs with the M1 chip running MacOS 12.0 or later. It needs no internet connection, which is why it works on the iPod touch, it is just using the camera to match images in its database.

The app is actively being worked on, so check in the app store for updates often.
As of version 1.1, February 16, 2022, it opens with the instructions for using the app and you need to hit the Accept button to use the app.

Description from the App Store:

WalkAssist recognizes traffic related objects(crosswalk signal, crosswalk, and traffic signals) and alerts you through voice alerts.
Use it with a harness for the best results. The voice will only work if your ringer is on. Note that the current version only works in landscape mode on most devices(this will be fixed soon in the next version). It is not a substitute for your orientation and mobility skills. It does not replace you current mobility aid, but is rather intended to act as an additional aid to enhance your orientation and navigation skills. Please be aware of your surroundings while using the app. It is your responsibility to maintain your personal safety at all times while using WalkAssist.

Weatherology Mobile, LLC., free

I had tried this app some years ago. They have been udpating it, and now it works well with VoiceOver, at least for the forecast info. IN the 7.9 version, in settings, if you double tap on details instead of the simple forecast, it doesn't say selected, but it is. That should be fixed in the next update. Their customer support is excellent!

We are focused on creating the best hands-free audio experience in vehicles in accordance with Apple CarPlay guidelines.
Although our expertise is audio, we are meteorologists, so we offer all the tools you need to stay informed. Up-to-the-minute radar that loads quickly and zooms in to your specific location. Storm vectors that illustrate current storm location and storm movement.
We offer current weather advisory graphics with up-to-the-minute audio weather details for each bulletin.

Sundial - Sun & Moon Widgets, by Tier 9 Digital, free with in-app purchases

I wrote the developer because the explanation of the in-app purchases was very confusing in the app store. He responded in less than 24 hours, more like 12 hours, with a clear explanation which is also on his web site, see below. I went with the bundle that unlocks everything for the phone and watch for $9.99. I like supporting developers who are that responsive.
Some information from the App Store description:
12 fun home screen widgets • Apple Watch App with 100s of Complications • Create alerts for 24 solar & lunar events such as sunrise, sunset, dawn, dusk, and moonset
Sundial displays the sun and moon's rise/set cycle in a 24-hour ring. You can create alerts for solar/lunar events and see times for a different date or location. No Internet is required to compute rise/set and other times: everything is calculated on your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
Times for dawn, sunrise, solar noon (sun peak), sunset, and dusk are displayed, along with daylight length. Moonrise, lunar noon (moon peak), and moonset are shown, along with lunar illumination and graphical moon phase. Unlike most apps, moon tilt is customized to your time and location.
Create iOS notifications for 24 solar and lunar events:
The app has full voice over support for all features.
Note: reported times switch between AM/PM and 12/24 notation based on your system settings.
What’s New
May 4, 2021 Version 7.1
Sundial Watch:
- New option for what to display inside the dial circular complication: solar or lunar altitude
- Added warning to About page if location services are disabled
- Voice over improvements
- Fixed: the setting to turn off the twilights on dial complications was not sticky and reverted back to on whenever the Watch app was killed off by watchOS
- Fixed: on the Watch, latitude/longitude meridian direction on About page could be reported incorrectly as E or N when near the meridian
Sundial Widgets:
- Voice over improvements
iOS and iPad:
- Add information about watchOS 7 requirement to Welcome and in-app purchase pages
Note from the developer: the Apple Watch app should be good to go for voice over, but I still have some work to do on the complications. The dial complication is good, but any of the others only read the label of the complication and not data. That is high on my list to complete. He has a VoiceOver user on his beta team to assist him.

TalkingTime, $1.99 by Fortuisoft

• TalkingTime speaks the time on the hour, half-hour and/or quarter-hour.
• "Set and forget". The app only runs during setup so you can do other stuff with your phone, and it won't run down your battery.

The developer is very responsive and working to make the app as accessible as possible. I reached out to him about the app before purchasing it and he put me in touch with Pam Coffey, who is another VoiceOver user who had sorted out how to setup the app. She shared the below with me and gave me permission to pass it along.

I have modified her instructions to fit iOS 15.2, but Pam deserves credit for the bulk of the instructions.

How to set up the TalkingTime app, written by Pam Coffey, and modified by Richard Turner.

When you open the app, the entire screen is taken up by the in-app settings. The first button is not labeled. Double tapping on it just gives you the message to set the schedule and forget it.
The next item simply says " Set desired schedule then exit the app."
Next is Background Sound, which is now turned on by default, which is what you want.

When you double-tap Schedule, there are four columns of time indications: on-hour , beginning with midnight at the top of the screen, and ending with 11 PM at the base of the column; quarter past, beginning with 12:15 AM, and ending with 11:15 PM at the base of the column; half-past, beginning and ending with 12:30 AM and 11:30 PM; and three-quarters past, arranged in the same way. If you wish, for example, to have it alert you every 15 minutes throughout the day, beginning at 6:30 AMand ending at 10:30 PM, you will double-tap 6:30 AM and long press (also known as double-tap and hold) on 10:30 PM. Next, double-tap on 6:45 AM, and long press 9:45 PM. Then, double-tap 7 AM, and Lon press 10 PM. Finally, double-tap 7:15 AM, and long press 10:15 PM. If you _only want it to alert you at a few times of the day, simply double-tap the times you wish to be alerted (e.g., 6:30 AM, 8 AM, 2:45 PM, 6 PM and 10 PM). If you have selected a time and then wish to deselect it, double-tapping it again will toggle it off. If you wish to deselect _all of the selected times within a column, find the one nearest the top of that column, and long press it.

As of Version 4.8.1 of Talking Time, you can do two more things with the announcements. If it is a spoken announcement, you cann quadruple tap on the time and a text field opens up. You can enter any phrase you want spoken each time that announcement is made.
Now go to the home screen and then return to TalkingTime if you have more settings to work on.

Next is Speak Changes. Speak changes is now on by default which helps when making adjustments.

The next heading is Voice or Ding. Double tap and you can set each quarter hour to be a voice announcement or a ding. See the explanation of the Ding patterm below.

Both Voice announcements and dings are limited to a total of 64 per 24 hour period.

high ding on the hour (minute hand at the top)

The next item is Voice". Here, you can choose from among a number of speaking voices; and, you can also choose speaking rate (which is a bit quirky), whether or not you want it to begin with "The time is …",., and whether or not you want it to include AM and PM. Once you've set these options, double-tap "Save"; then, the next item is Volume. The volume setting for this app is related to that of the ringer and alerts; therefore, if you wish to make a major change in the volume, you may need to go to your general settings, choose "Sounds and Haptics", and enable "Change with Ringer and Alerts"-at least until you have it set to your preference.

The remaining items are "It's Not Working", "Feedback", "Share", and "About".
Its Not Working is a way of testing to make sure your settings will work. Double tap "Its not working" and then immediately go to the home screen. Within a few seconds, you should hear a message from TalkingTime confirming that it is working. If you don't hear it, try rebooting your device and try again.

Notification settings

As of iOS 15.2 and version 4.8.1 of Talking Time, the only notifications you need to have on under Settings, Notifications, Talkingtime, are Allow Notifications and Sounds On. That way it won't clutter your notification center. After setting it up, take it out of the app switcher and it will continue working in the background. It takes almost no power and doesn't drag down your phone resources.

SiriusXM on the App Store

StarplayrX, 99¢

From the app store description:
Ultra simple Satellite Radio audio player for Sirius XM subscribers. One if its best features is accessibility.
StarPlayrX for iOS is a simple and easy-to-use streaming satellite radio app. It requires a streaming satellite radio account or trial.
StarPlayrX is accessible and one of its features is the magic tap that toggles a stream. Sighted users can also double at the player view to pause.
The player currently supports music, talk and sports radio stations that matches the user's subscription. It currently does not include Xtra radio stations.
StarPlayrX organizes channels within categories. SPX groups these categories by type. All the talk channels are located together under the Talk heading. Also, the All category is located under Other header towards the bottom.
Each category groups channels logically. For instance all the rock channels are located together with the Rock category and specific artist channels are in the Artists category. Categories and their channels are subject to change at any time.
The user interface for StarPlayrX is simple, clean, well organized and most of all easy to use. The goal of StarPlayrX is to enhance your SiriusXM satellite radio streaming experience.
StarPlayrX runs in the foreground or background and uses very few resources to run. Artist and song info is available on the lock screen. If StarPlayrX is interrupted for a phone call, it will do its best to restart the stream after the phone call is over. SPX also mixes well with Apple Maps audio.
* His favorites are called All stars. You can select any station to add to your "All stars."

Zoom IQ 6 Microphone, $99.99

I use the IQ 6 for recording with the iPod Touch or iPhone. The IQ 6 has an earphone jack so you can hear VoiceOver while recording. Note: you either have to remove your case or have a thin enough case for the short jack on the microphone to fit into the lightning plug on the device.
Turn your favorite iOS device into a field recorder by connecting an iQ6. Whether it's a podcast on the fly, an impromptu concert or band rehearsal or a sound effect you want to incorporate into your next video, you can count on the iQ6 to capture the moment with superior audio.
X/Y recording made easy
The iQ6 features two high quality unidirectional condenser microphones in an X/Y configuration, the same ones used in our world-famous H4n Handy Recorder. (handiRecorder is a good app, but difficult to use with VoiceOver.)
X/Y stereo recording is a great way to cover a wide area while still capturing sound sources in the center with clarity and definition. You can even change the mic angle from 90 degrees for a tightly focused image to 120 degrees for immersive wide-angle stereo. (US Patent 8184815)

Talking Tuner by Hotpaw productions, 99¢

HotPaw Talking Tuner is a hands-off, sound-activated, talking, chromatic, musical instrument tuner. It talks to tell you if your instrument is in tune or not; so you don't even have to look at it or touch the display. Talking Tuner uses speech synthesis, and works with or without VoiceOver being enabled.

This app was created because I received a request to develop an iPhone app which could help a vision-challenged individual tune their musical instrument. This app is the result.

With the Auto-Speak switch turned on, Talking Tuner will listen for a note to be played, and then, after waiting for the end of the sound (so as not to talk over it), will speak the note name, and how many cents sharp or flat the end of the note is estimated to be.
Using headphones may help make it easier to hear what this app is saying while tuning. Make sure to turn the volume up high enough to hear it.
The pitch estimation algorithm works best for notes between 2 octaves below Middle-C to 2 octaves above Middle-C. It may not work as well for very low notes, very high notes, or with any background noise, harmony, or accompaniment present. The default tuning resolution is about +- 3 cents (3/100ths of the pitch difference between semitones). Optional higher resolution tuning settings may result in a slower tuning response.
App is being kept up to date.
I have an audio demo on my demos and walk-throughs page.

Metronome for Watch, Haptic Watch Metronome

BY Ivan Parfenchuk

Anna Dresner posted a message about the app, Metronome for Watch, Haptic Watch Metronome that is currently free as of June 5th, 2022 on the VIPhone Users list.

It works only on the watch and is fully accessible. You cannot have the VoiceOver Digital Crown Navigation on while using the app if you want to adjust the beats per minute while VO is on. To toggle the Digital Crown Navigation, perform a two finger triple tap on the watch. With the Digital Crown Navigation off, the app is truly fully accessible.

you adjust the BPM with the digital crown, and VoiceOver reports what you've set it to. The watch taps your wrist and also beeps if Silent Mode is off.

There's also a start button, which becomes a Stop button when you select it.
