*Note: you cannot read books made for a specific format like iBooks, Nook, Kindel, etc. However, with Kindle books, there is a PC utility you can use to convert Kindle books so they can be read using Voice Dream Reader, see Codex below.
Voice Dream Reader in the App Store
Here is a little section from his web site. I encourage any avid readers to follow the link below and read about it and install the utility.
A few years ago, I wrote a tutorial which guided people through the installation and configuration of software for the purposes of gaining access to books purchased from the Amazon Kindle Store. The guide proved popular, but it required heavy use of the command line, making it unsuitable and daunting for quite a lot of people, not to mention that it was an absolute nightmare to troubleshoot if anything went wrong. Which it frequently did.
Subsequently, in 2014, I started to develop a small prototype application to make the process easier and more intuitive, not only for people wanting to read Kindle eBooks, but also for me when people needed help. I named it Codex, a word used from the 16th century onwards to denote, now ancient, manuscripts in book form. In the second half of 2015, I finally rewrote that prototype to include the functionality I wanted it to have from the start, and the software is now publically available to download.

Boop is an an app to detect levels of light and interpret this information with sound. It allows its blind and visually impaired users to detect whether lights are on or off. It covers a broad range of light levels which spans from sensing daylight through open windows to checking whether the indicator light is on for a wifi router.
How to use
- Open app and accept permissions to use camera (first time only) - Point phone towards a light source - Listen and feel as your phone changes tone and frequency of vibration while getting closer to the light - Only the light level at the center of the camera (directly perpendicular to the phone face) is measured. Pointing the phone directly at the light source will get the highest reading.
- Volume control buttons on side of phone control Boop's playback volume - Mute will completely turn off sound - Toggle vibrate on or off manually with the switch at the bottom of the app.
Voice over features
- 2 finger scrub to turn vibrate on or off - 2 finger double tap to close app - Tap center of app to read light level
Light Detector transforms any natural or artificial light source it encounters into sound. Light Detector is easy to use! Just run the application and point your iPhone camera in any direction. You will hear a higher or lower sound depending on the intensity of the light.
Tap on the screen to hear (if VoiceOver is enabled) the current luminosity value (from 0 to 100%). The result can be provided with a short delay (within three seconds). If you tap and hold, LightDetector stops playing. Useful to check lighting before attempting to perform OCR (Optical Character Recognition.)

In case you find it difficult to hold the phone steady for OCR, or need to scan a large number of pages, here are some stands that make scanning easier.
FopyDo stands for Photo-Copy-Document. It is a great concept in stands. It measures 11.75 by 9.5 by .5 inches when folded up. It is made from corigated plastic, so it is light weight but very durable. It is easy to set up. The default height is 10.5 inches and works great for scanning an 8.5 by 11 inch sheet of paper. At it's tallest setting, it puts the device about 14 inches from the desk and will work for scanning legal sized documents or both pages of a book at once. It has a notch to help you place the camera correctly and it has a microsuction strip on the top to hold the device steady. It is strong enough to hold an iPad Mini. There are two metal legs that have microsuction tape on the ends so it doesn't slide on slick surfaces.
You have several options for ordering:
order Fopydo using Pay pal or a credit card from: Fopydo web site
You can also order the Fopydo Scanning Stand from the National Federation of the Blind Independence Market for $12.00 plus shipping and handling. The scanning stand may be ordered online at: NFB Independence Market
Alternatively, you may place an order over the phone by calling (410) 659-9314, extension 2216.
Mr. Wardiga has now created an attachment that makes it easier to scan a book or a pile of lose pages. The Book Reading Aid plus Stand is $35.00 plus $5.00 shipping.

ScanJig is made from hard plastic and is quite durable. It uses room light or the camera flash for getting a good stand. It measures 9 by 13, by 1.5 inches when closed. The assembly instructions are good and you can call them to get help if necessary.

StandScan Pro is a document scanning stand that turns your mobile phone into a document scanner. Combined with any of the OCR apps, provides excellent access to documents for VoiceOver users. Be the eyes for a blind person in need of help remotely through a live video connection if you are sighted or be assisted by the network of sighted users if you are blind.
They have recently begun a section to request help from a specific company. Microsoft Accessibility is the first to join with Be my Eyes to provide help if your computer stops speaking and you need expert help figuring out what is going on. Blind users can request help from a sighted person and the sighted users will then be called for help. As soon as the first sighted user accepts the request for help a live audio-video connection will be set up between the two and the sighted user can tell the blind person what she sees when the blind user points his phone at something using the rear-facing camera.
As a sighted user you don't need to worry about missing a call and 'leave a blind person hanging' - you are a part of the bigger Be My Eyes helper-network and we will find the next available sighted person in the network. The challenges that the blind person needs help with can be anything from knowing the expiry date on the milk to getting help crossing the street.
Note: We encourage blind users to be patient when requesting help because we rely on real people to help you.

Nearby Explorer is a full featured GPS app designed for use by people who are blind. Instead of just providing directions, it describes the environment in ways comparable to reading signage or observing road characteristics. It uses onboard maps, so a data connection is not required, but if you have one, Nearby Explorer supplements the on board map data with crowd collected locations from Foursquare or Google Places. It includes complete maps for the United States and Canada which contain millions of points of interest. The onboard maps are over 4GB in size, so be sure the device you plan to use has enough available space before purchasing. Nearby Explorer works with any device running iOS version 9 or later, but if the device does not contain its own GPS receiver, like most iPads and iPods, you must use an external GPS receiver. All iPhones contain GPS receivers. Nearby Explorer works by letting you select from several different location related options about what to announce as you move. These include both typical items like street name and address and specialized options like approaching streets, intersection configurations, and nearby places and the distance and direction to them. (All announcements are optional.) All of this information is shown on the home screen and is available at any time, but typical use is to adjust the level of announcements, then lock the screen and put the device away. This keeps both hands free and let's your preferred voice speak the characteristics of the environment as you move.Nearby Explorer in the App Store?

Audio Memos is a professionally made audio recorder. It has an amazingly intuitive interface, which is easy to use and full of powerful features. Use it in interviews, lectures, music session, briefings, ... and simplify your recording tasks.
I use the IQ 6 for recording with the iPod Touch or iPhone. The IQ 6 has an earphone jack so you can hear VoiceOver while recording. Note: you either have to remove your case or have a thin enough case for the short jack on the microphone to fit into the lightning plug on the device.
Turn your favorite iOS device into a field recorder by connecting an iQ6. Whether it's a podcast on the fly, an impromptu concert or band rehearsal or a sound effect you want to incorporate into your next video, you can count on the iQ6 to capture the moment with superior audio.
X/Y recording made easy
The iQ6 features two high quality unidirectional condenser microphones in an X/Y configuration, the same ones used in our world-famous H4n Handy Recorder. (handiRecorder is a good app, but difficult to use with VoiceOver.)
X/Y stereo recording is a great way to cover a wide area while still capturing sound sources in the center with clarity and definition. You can even change the mic angle from 90 degrees for a tightly focused image to 120 degrees for immersive wide-angle stereo. (US Patent 8184815)
Zoom IQ 6 at Amazon I used the IQ 6 and Audio Memos Pro to record the demo of Voice Dream Reader 4, available here:
